As a note, I do not represent DEP. I just enjoy working with computers, and extend my condolences to DEP and the victims of the attack.

Hey everyone. Many of the people who appeared on the hacker's list had very simple passwords. I suspect that if their passwords were more complex, they would not have appeared on the list. (Techie note: he probably used hash lookup tables...)

A few tips to keeping yourself safe on the Internet:
  • Longer passwords are better passwords!
  • Putting capital letters, lower case, numbers, and punctuation make your password even stronger!
  • Try to have different passwords for every account!
  • Remember to have extra strong passwords for email and PayPal accounts.

Longer passwords are not better for Furcadia.

Furcadia only checks the first eight characters of the password as has been confirmed by Felorin on these forums.

Longer passwords are still better in that an 8 character password is better than a 3, 4, 5, 6 or7 character password, which a lot of people still use.

Personally, I generally don't use passwords shorter than 7 characters anywhere on the internet any more, haven't in over a decade.

I don't know much when it comes to programming, but how come it only recognizes the first eight characters?

In addition to what Thatcher said:

Never ever use the same password for your furre and your e-mail.

If someone guesses your furre's password and changes it, it is possible to return the furre to you. If someone changes your e-mail account's password, there is hardly anything that can be done about it.

Other tips:
  • Don't use easy-to-guess passwords. Your favorite band or your boyfriend's name, for example, is a bad password.
  • Change your password at least yearly if not more often.
  • Never write down your password anywhere, in real life or on the net. It's better to reset your password than to lose your account because someone found your notes.
