Alrighty.
A mighty idea hast come to me and Shirotzugh.
Check it out ^-^

just as one can buy portrait spaces, one can aslo buy avatar spaces so that furcadia can become more diverse and cool and REALLY start raking in the bucks.

That, and it'd just be sweet. ^-^
But the big bucks thing is a bonus, no?
Frankly, I figured Timo would be the one to ask about this, mainly because, well, he'd more or less have to deal with reprogramming furcadia.exe to allow that.
But just wanted to propose the idea, and say I was taking a break from my hiatus ^-^
Uwahaha!

I like the idea Rand...my only problem would be with people walking around with their avatar wings, dragons, and phoenixes...when some of us have actually paid for them.  I suppose it would be another review process for the avatars though, right? :)

I think that custom avatars would be taking things a step too far at the moment - the download size would be noticably larger than for a portrait. Additionally, if somebody has purchased wings, they may need to create an avatar with and without wings which would make things larger. Besides that, creating a portrait is easier to create than a completely new avatar. ;)

*grins*
Point taken.
It's a neat idea, but I guess we'll leave it in the hands of the dreampatchers for now, eh?

I just thought of somethin', as well. Whenever someone enters a mainmap with their custom av, everyfurre will have to d/l it from the server, which would be a major strain on it O.o

Well, shazbot.

This idea has been suggested in several forms already, and basically can't work with the current client.

But I've changed my mind about it - I like the idea, and see it as a potentially LARGE moneyspinner for furc.

http://www.furcadia.com/cgi/forums/topic.cgi?forum=19&topic=213 - Custom Avatar graphics  (InsanaMuerte)

Basically, the problems I've given in the past are that portraits are tiny, and are downloaded only when you click on a furre, and yet avatars are huge (12 frames, plus 12 for each type of wings, etc you have), and would need to be downloaded the first time you SAW a furre.

Imagine going into AI, then lagging solid while you downloaded 20 avatars for the people standing in the hall.

But, thinking about it, you could change it so that they had their default avatar until you clicked on them or typed `getavatar furrename or something. But even then, there are several problems.

Probably largest is the extra bandwidth that would require. With the correct pricing level, though, this would pay for itself.

Next is the larger amount of time to review them. Same as above, though, plus, with good software, it could be considerably automated: all 12 frames displayed onscreen at once, colourcycling. Click a button and it's accepted: click another, and it's denied, and a messagebox comes up asking for a reason: you type it in, the email gets sent, move on to the next furre.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with someone putting a dragon or phoe in their avatar slot, since the slots would have to be marketed at considerably more than the price of current avatars anyway. They would be foolish to do so, but it would be OK if they wanted.

Personally, I would just have my current avatar, and give it extra poses for sitting, etc. So if I wanted to be smoking a pipe, or dancing, I could just turn on the relevant avatar, and those of my friends who had downloaded it would see that avatar. Those who hadn't, wouldn't, but they'd still see me sitting/standing/lying, which would be good enough.

I like the idea, both for the extra scope it gives for poses, and for the extra revenue it would generate for DEP. People will want LOTS of avatar spaces, because they will let them do extra actions and poses, wear other outfits, etc.

Taking it further, how's about "restricted" avatar patches, which would only be allowed in age-restricted areas? Or in pay-to-view areas? (This would also work for portraits).

These could be more expensive. :)

Doh, yeah, forgot the walk anim.
Still, the idea's still sound.

Though I wouldn't want to have it come off a mouseclick. Shift-click, maybe?
