Sometimes life has a way of throwing you a curveball, and you forget to duck. This last week and a half has been a very frustrating time. The short story goes that I went in for a minor, outpatient surgery and it went wrong and after another surgery and over a week in the hospital with one complication after another, I am finally home. Though still tired, sore and weak, I will recover with little perm damage.

I am especially upset that this had to happen during our 10th Celebration week. However, we will be 10 all year and this just gives us more of a chance to spread out the festivities. I did manage to at least dictate one talk during the festivities (I couldn't let the Beekins down, though I forgot to mention the names i wanted to) I would really like to rehold a couple of the other special days. Watch the 10th Celebration forums and pages for more info. (After Christmas)

I want to say a huge "Thank you" to those who sent me flowers, that was so very sweet! I had ones from Australia, Germany, Utah and other places I'm not sure of. Kisanth, Narnia, Campion, Jaredsgo, Rei-jin, and Cironir, as well as my family brought them. They really helped get through the ordeal. Oh Narnia! We joked while there that my room was actually in the land of Narnia since the outside wall of it was labeled wardrobe and was a two sided linen closet. ;p

The few times I felt well enough to log on I got many lovely whispers of well wishes and many wanted the details of what was wrong with me. It's really hard to type it all out (especially then, as all typing was one pawed due to my IV) so for those who really want to know the gory details, I'll put them here. Consider this definately TMI (too much information) and those squeemish or disinterested should stop reading now.

I'd been having nausea problems for several months and a CAT scan showed that I had a swollen kidney and what looked like a kidney stone in the tube. The Urologist said that it was a fairly simple, outpatient surgery to remove the stone and since it would probably stop the nausea, I agreed to do it before the Celebrations, thinking how nice it would be to feel a bit better for them. So, Wed the 13th, I went in for the surgery. It only took about an hour and the doc sent me home. She said no stone, but my tube was constricted and she'd stretched it out and put in a stint (plastic tube inserted inside my tube to keep it open while it heals).

I was a lot more ill the next day than I'd expected with a lot of bleeding and by evening had very severe abdomiinal pain. I finally went to the Emergency Room. They did another CT scan and xrays. Not only were my lower intestines frozen, there was a tear in my tube that was leaking fluid into my abdomon (it wasn't for a couple of days that I found out that the leakage caused my intestines to paralyze). After 7 hours in the ER, sitting in a freezing cold room with no meds for the pain, they transfered me by ambulence over to another hospital in Austin. Primes, that was the worst trip of my life. I had no idea they didn't have shocks on ambulences ;p

They took me to my room and finally started to give me morphine for the pain. I'm what they call a "hard stick", meaning that it's very, very hard to get blood from me or start an IV. My veins are deep and rolly and I have low blood pressure. They ended up with 7 different IVs, because they'd quit working, while I was there. I had countless blood taken and holes poked in my arms and hands and they still look like an impresionistic painting in blues, greens, yellows, pinks and reds. ;p

Anyway, the next few days were pretty painful and full of a lot of meds to get my intestines working again. I don't think I want to watch the show House anymore. It was scarey imagining what awful thing they'd make me do or drink next. They managed to get me working again and i thought I'd get to come home, when the pain starting getting worse and I started running a fever. Then the stint came out on it's own. Another CAT Scan showed that my kidney was now badly swollen and infected. It was caused by the fluid that was leaky into my abdomen. So on Monday they scheduled me more surgery to fix the tear and replace the stint.

Now, here's where some of my existing medical stuff started to cause problems. First, I have a fast heart rate, tachycardia, and some meds trigger it to go very fast. I kept going up to the high 120s, which made it hard to get enough oxygen in me. Next, I tend to be allergic to petroleum products like latex and it seems other plastics, like the ones they use for tubing and masks for oxygen. Just the smell gave me asthma attacks. I was also allergic to the tube they put down my throat during the surgery and it gave me a raw swollen tongue and ulcers on lips, tongue and throat (makes it really hard to eat and talk). I'm also just not recovered from my bout with cancer last year and my overal health is low.

It was really hard for them to revive me after the surgery the second time and my lungs were bad. They had to tape an open oxygen humidifier to my chest to try and keep my oxygen up high enough to stay conscious through the night. It was during that night that I started to halucenate too. This is kind of funny though. My fever had gone up to 103.3 and all the meds were already making the walls change color and shape all the time. The nurse was messing with my IV and I looked down at it and it had turned into a snarling little mouse, with it's tail stuck into my arm. It took me a few seconds to realize I was halucenating and no one else could see it before it went away ;p

The damage from the platics and the humidity all night gave me lungs full of white foam, which I spend the next couple of days vomiting out of my lungs. They thought I might have pneumonia, but thankfully, I didn't., though I still have a bad cough from it. Next few days, I worked hard to get to come home.(BTW, I highly recomend asking for a "hospitalist" dosctor when you get stuck in there. You feel kind of lost in there with all the specialist, but the Hospitalist will look at everything and help you get better sooner) I had to be up walking a lot, eatign solid foods and no fever. Fever took the longest to go away but I was so excited this morning when they let me go.

I'm still pretty sick, but Gar, Jossie (my daughter) and Cat(Felorin) take good care of me (one of them made sure to be with me the whole time I was in the hospital). I'm a terrible work-a-holic so I'm sure i'll be back working real soon..if not a bit already. Hardest thing is not having gotten ready for Christmas, but Jossie went shopping and decorated the trees and made sure i had some Christmas to come home to. :) Family and friends are wonderful things to have and I have some really nice ones. I'm also really worried about my medical bills. DEP pays way too much for my medical insurance already, but I'm still paying the uncovered bits from my cancer. I guess i have to wait and see.

Again, I'm so sorry that the Anniversary didn't go off as I'd envisioned. Hope I can get back to work on that soon...not to mention the update. Have I mentioned it sucks being such a small company..really a family...that runs Furcadia? One of us gets ill, let alone a couple and the others take care of them and things just don't happen.

Wow, wrote way too much, I think I was lonely in there without all of you!

This is really shocking ... didn't know you had to go through all of that :/ ... especially the word "ulcer" in there scared me, if you know what I mean... x.x. Well, I'm glad you're at home, get well soon! (:

We're all so glad you've made it through your ordeal. I'm so glad I didn't know the details while you were going through it. Just skimming through them is horrifying to see so much that went wrong with a "simple" outpatient proceedure.
It's great for you to be home for the holidays and you're blessed to have such a wonderful RL family to be by you and help your through it all.
God Bless them for holding up through it all too and I wish you all the very best Christmas and New Year at home.

Relax and enjoy the season... like you said, we can celebrate Furcadia's 10th all year.

Goodness Emmy had no idea of the turmoil you and your family went through. It's good to know you are recovering and with such a wonderful daughter and fiancee at your side to help. The birthday celebration was awesome and your input you did get to do was so memorable. Please take it easy as you speedily heal dont' need ole Felorin in the hospital right behind you. Take care and God Bless Emmy!

Don't do that again! Your'e too important to everyone to just play hooky like that. tongue.gif

But really, we're glad your feeling better and that the worst part is over. I hope you get to full strength and capacity soon, I know how boring lying around in bed all day wishing to be better can be.

Thanks so much for the rose, I'll keep it for ever (well, uh, the screen shot, anyway tongue.gif )

You stay good, Emerald. smile.gif

This proves I need to keep up on the forums more often! :P

Wow, you're such a trooper, Emmie. I wish I was like that--I'm pain sensitive. It's good to hear you're doing better, and to have you back and healthy (or getting there). Family and friends are wonderful things to have, as well as a whole community who cares about you!

If you don't mind my asking, but what was this recent surgery for?

It was just to remove the stint (plastic drain tube) they put in before.
