Okay. So, I'm sure a lot of people, just like me, abhor netspeak and when people can't seem to spell a simple word. So, I was egged on by some of my friends to see if this can be possible in anyway.

A Spell Checker!

When you type something, if you mispell it, it'll underline it and ask if you want to correct it or not(Something like the spell checker on Microsoft Word and stuff). I know a lot of people would love this, especially the RPer's cause it would help them cut down on they're own typo's when they're spelling faster than their brain can process and they skip a letter or rearrange. A grammar checker would fall under this category too(i.e. Capitalizing, periods, comma's, ect.)

If it's not possible, that's understandable, but I had to say it. I know that when I click someone I tell them if they mispelt anything. Whether they correct it or not is their own choice, I also prefer people to be able to spell decently and use capitalization in my own RP's but that's just getting to the point where it's too much to ask for. I hope that this suggestion is possible now, or if not now, then perhaps in the near future ^_^

Narnia

It's been suggested before. I'll have to see if I can dig up the old posts when I have the time.

You'd have to have some way of selecting which dictionaries to use, though. American English? British English? German, French, Spanish? The list goes on. In German, writing 1000,00 and 1.000 both mean "one thousand", but that's not so in English. sa.gif

The problem is that making a spell-checker is a LOOOOOT of work, you have to fill in the accepted dictionary of words and even if they only did it for American English, that's a whooole lot of words!

To use another company's pre-made spell checker in Furcadia, DEP would likely have to pay a lot of royalty fees or a subscription fee to get permission to implement it into the Furcadia software. And then we'd have problems with words not being accepted that we use in Furcadia every day like "furre" or "wyrmme" or "bugge"

If you're concerned about your own spelling then of course you can transfer your chat over to Microsoft Word or something similar and use their spell check before sending it in Furcadia.

Of all the things to be implemented into Furcadia, though, I honestly think this is one of the ones I'm less worried about.

And due to the roleplay nature of the game, we are going to have to include fantasy languages such as Elvish or Klington.

Cruncher

Personally, if I had a spell checker running in the background, suggesting I correct every mistake it sees:
"Are you sure you wish to post this without correcting the errors?"

...the laptop would be thrown out the window, and shot at.

Microsoft Word is bad enough. Don't need it haunting me with trying to keep a conversation going. Yes, having folks spell correctly is a good thing. Giving people reason to take a sledge to the computer after 15 minutes exposure to the correction feature, not such a good thing. Reminds me of animaniacs and the "Good idea, bad idea" shorts.

Having it as an available option, good idea.
Having it constantly bother you about your dotted I's, and crossed T's, bad idea.

I almost look forward to the "But Cruncher, you correct everyone!" replies.
Well, not really.
