Yeah, like I said in the description for this post.. it has been discussed before and I have a different idea for the avatars..

Instead of going and making a whole new custom avatar, why not just edit the clothes, hair style, shoes, etc. And place them on the already made avatars? Then there really wouldn't be very much more download time added to Furc since the frames and all were already made? And just had those small things added to 'em.

And also since you guys think it would make you laggy when you loaded someone's avatar.. why not just make it where you just loaded it once, and didn't have to load it again. Kinda like the port spaces..

And, yeah, I know I'm probably going to get replies like, "Oh, it's already been discussed before and you should just go to the other board and read the replies to that topic.. etc." -.-
Oh, well, though..

No, actually, I'm going to respond to your post on its own merits. :p

Because the avatar model is not set up for this; if this were changed (and if/when Furc goes 3d, it will change, leaving us with the ability to easily change skins, but the problem of having only skintight textures, literally) then it would take totally redoing the graphics engine (like going 3d).

The issue there is diskspace, and the fact that you STILL have to do that initial download; if I have to download five people's avatars all at once, I'm gonna have a lot of lag for a while.  Portraits, I can click on one at a time; -I- have the initiative in starting the download.

Custom avatars will probably, sigh, come with the pseudo 3d engine, sigh.

No matter how much some of us might wish to see neither. ;p

What if they just had a bunch of default ones, and you could set them, like the standard things, except you can choose which ones to use? Kinda like colours, excepts it changes the actual clothing.

The problem is that each item of clothing would have to be drawn on each furre in each position.

Even if you don't draw the whole avatar, since clothing moves with the person, you'd have to draw it for each pose that furre can be in - and because the different avatars are different shapes and sizes, you'd have to draw most of it for each avatar.

You're looking at not only a complex positioning system to get the item 'properly' on the body with each different step, but a lot of art that has to be downloaded and drawn.  It's really not feasible with the current graphics engine.

When they make the avatars 3d rendered so that we can apply skins and textures it'll be easy to change the colors of clothes...

But everything will have to be skin tight to the avatar mesh.  And that's just oogly, and you can't make skirts, and you can't make baggy pants, and you can't make big sleeves, or flowing gowns, or robes, or flapping cloaks...  without getting in and messing with meshes, of course, which is nasty and requires more software.

(You can tell I'm not looking forward to this. =P)

Hopefully every furre in the 3D version will have a 'box' of space around them, Leticia -- Leaving the 'grid' system of maps in, which makes it easy to build, and also lets you put in some non-skintight features.
