Someone at my giveaway said only 300 people can be in a dream at once...Is that true?
I've had 300 people in chynatown before |

299 minus a few required processes like Master Socket used to be the limit. It was raised when FurN started getting full messages. I think it's something like 440 players now! :)

When I win the lottery and start giving away thousands of dollars in digos maybe I'll get 440 people

What an odd limit... I had somehow expected something like 127/128 or 255/256. Those are the more 'common' limits of software. The next limit up from that is 32767-ish so I doubt that one would've been a problem

It's probably something specified directly by DEP, so no need to rely on the power-of-2 limits. 440 still seems kinda odd as opposed to 400 or 450, though. XD
Actually, if you following the ^2 methodology, the next 'limit' would be 512, would it not? |

Why assume that everything in programming must be a base 2 sized number?
Why would 440 be strange? Heck, that's a valid 3 phase voltage value.

Well, it's very simple, really. In hexadecimals, 440 spellls 1B8, or "I BATE", which is only fitting.
That, uh, that isn't dorky, right? ;) -s!- |

I got over my "make things powers of 2 for a little more efficiency and/or geekiness" mostly back in the old 8 bit or 16 bit days. These days I like to make numbers Real People can relate to, 'cause now real people play computer games and I want y'all to come play Furcadia too. That's why I also start numbers or lists of things at 1 whenever I remember to instead of at 0 like programmers do.
Of course the new dream limit was programmed by sanctimonious anyway and not by me. I would say "1B8" doesn't spell "I Bate" or even "I bait" (a fisherman's battlecry?), but more like "I be eight". Which is too young for the Furcadia server software to be saying, since it's 11 (plus parts of the DragonSpires code are older). And it's too old for me to say, at least mentally - ask Emerald Flame on that. (No, really I claim to be mentally about 12, but only 'cause I don't wanna be a teenager and get acne.) And when you see something that counts from 0 upwards instead of one, I blame sanctimonious. Even when it's not actually his fault! If y'all fill some dreams up we will pick a new number. 667, the neighbor of the beast, might upset some religious people. 812 is part of the famous OU812 so that has potential. What numbers do YOU all like, and why? |

I've always been a fan of 42 myself, too (everyone loves molybdenum!), but it might be too small for a capacity limit, hehe.
How 'bout... 5318008? |

QUOTE(Felorin @ Apr 6 2008, 04:39 PM) I got over my "make things powers of 2 for a little more efficiency and/or geekiness" mostly back in the old 8 bit or 16 bit days. These days I like to make numbers Real People can relate to, 'cause now real people play computer games and I want y'all to come play Furcadia too. That's why I also start numbers or lists of things at 1 whenever I remember to instead of at 0 like programmers do. I wasn't saying you would've consciously chosen 255 or so, but more so that due to the way it is implemented 255 becomes the natural barrier. For stuff like mapsize I agree that you should pick sensible numbers, but the number of furres in a dream is more an implementation detail and as such more prone to the power-of-two limits. |
