"SCARE FOR A CURE": A LEGEND CONTINUED In Austin Texas, this annual event will once more be taking place. For details: http://www.myspace.com/scareforacure2008 Once upon a time, Richard Garriott would turn his house into a spook house of massive proportions: BRITANNIA MANOR. Being an affiliate of Zachary Scott Theatre, many excellent actors smoothly and skillfully brought guests deep into the action, again and again. This face haunts the nightmares of many to this very day: http://www.io.com/~jgould/bmanor/master.html Felorin and I both volunteered for Britannia Manor. I won't go into details but it is the only haunted house I ever worked on that featured grown men and women wetting their pants in fear several times a night. I'm not exaggerating here. The dragonboat, that guests rode through the moat: http://www.io.com/~jgould/bmanor/dboat2.html The special effects routinely included "flying". http://www.io.com/~jgould/bmanor/flydem.html This was a big event. We organized entertainment to amuse the people outside, and the pre-show alone was great. Well, it was if you like fire-breathers, jugglers, drop-dead gorgeous snaky-bodied belly dancers, live music, and that sort of thing. Over the years, we had a number of celebrity guests, including Johnny Depp. Guests lined up for half a mile, camping overnight to get in: http://www.io.com/~jgould/bmanor/tentcity.html Richard's spookhouse grew into Haunted Trails, which ran for some years more to benefit Wild Basin Preserve, a nature center and wildlife area. It remained an experience that was a true adventure, challenging guests emotionally, mentally, and physically. This was not a mere walk-through. Haunted Trails brought together even more of Austin's special effects talent. Brought before Minos, a judge of the Underworld: http://www.io.com/~jgould/bmanor/mthron2.html Minos Himself: http://www.io.com/~jgould/bmanor/minos.html Now, Britannia Manor alumni, Haunted Trails geniuses, and many frightening new faces come together to put on "Scare for the Cure". And yes, several times a night, the patrons still do wet their pants. ................................................. (((**))).................................................. This year's theme is "World of Horrorcraft". It is especially being sponsored by a number of Austin-area computer game companies. From the start, SfaC allowed "Green" visitor groups. That is to say, guests with weaker hearts and delicate natures could request a less emotionally scarring experience. THIS year, for the first time, SfaC is also allowing "Red" visitor groups. A ticket for a Red tour is $5 more. Wearers of the red cyalume get the royal carpet treatment... of terror. There is Scare for a Cure... and then there's all the rest. ---------- Volunteers Wanted If you live in the Austin area and have transportation to the Elk's Lodge downtown, the World of Horrorcraft would love to swallow you up! From last year: My delicious Model Magic goodies decorate Jedd's huntin' lodge: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v515/Det...nt=DSC01565.jpg Edwin's special effects hold up to full daylight scrutiny: http://s268.photobucket.com/albums/jj22/nj...nt=DSC01897.jpg |
