Kamose

This list replaces Cameo's list from 2004, which was based on Cassiel's list from 2003.

I have reorganized and revised the list to include more recent suggestions. I have added wing and tail suggestions. I have omitted those avatars that have since been added, as well as those that DEP has announced are in the works. I am not including suggestions about poses, animations, colors, prices, or availability of existing avatars.

I have also added a summary of DEP's latest stance on each avatar (if known) and the extent to which each species is represented in the Dragonlands (Furcadia canon).

Topics are indexed according to the content of the original posts, not the replies. Some of these ideas may be older than indicated, because the Suggestions forum only goes back to 11/26/2001. (The old board is no longer accessible.)

Please PM me with any corrections or additions. I am especially interested in comments by DEP.

Upcoming Avatars and Wings: DEP does not plan to add any new wings or free avatars until after the 32-bit update, because all of the current avatars will have to be redone, and DEP doesn't want to create extra work for the artists. DEP has indicated that the following avatars are in the works:
  • Bee wings: Some time after the 32-bit update.
  • Wings: Will be detached from the avatars, which will make it possible to apply wings to Ferians and other avatars. DEP has made "chibi" wings that can be used on large and small avatars. Emerald Flame has also said that the Flox flower may be a "wing" type for Ferian avatars.
  • Attachments: Body parts will be detached from the avatars, which will make it possible to customize your avatar with different features. Silver Sponsors will be able to mix and match wings and body parts from all avatars that they own.
  • More detailed avatars: For the 32-bit graphics update, all avatars (including the free species) will be redone in more detailed format.

Wings: There won't be any new wings until after the 32-bit update. After this update, the wings will be detached from the avatars, so it will be easier to add new ones. Bee wings and "chibi" wings are planned for the future. It will also be possible to attach wings to other avatars, such as Ferians and the Nobles. Emerald Flame also says that Silver Sponsors will be able to turn off the wings of the mythical avatars or mix and match different wings from the avatars they own.
  • Feb 21 2014: Fairy wings, insect wings, elemental wings (such as nature, fire, ice, and lightning/storm), chibi wings.
  • Dec 26 2012: Allow players who already have the relevant Nobles and wings to use the Fluttercat and Flutterdog avatars.
  • Apr 25 2011: More wing types.
  • Apr 25 2009: Talzhemir offers a preview of the upcoming Bee wings.
  • Apr 18 2009: At the Town Meeting, Emerald Flame confirms plans for "chibi" wings, which can be used on large and small avatars.
  • Mar 12 2009: The ability to wear more than one pair of wings at a time.
  • Sep 13 2008: Ability to use wings on Furlings.
  • Aug 10 2008: Beetle wings.
  • Jul 22 2008: Bicolored wings.
  • Jul 21 2008: One wing.
  • May 16 2008: Bee wings. Emerald Flame confirms that dragonfly wings are planned for the future.
  • Mar 22 2008: Flutterby wings (colorful like Butterfly Wings, but feathery).
  • Feb 20 2008: The ability to turn off the wings on Unicorns. Emerald Flame says: "At some point you will be able to turn off the wings to any of the mythicals" and hints that you might be able to customize the wings on mythicals.
  • May 29 2007: Emerald Flame confirms that wings are planned for Ferians.
  • Aug 27 2006: More wing types, such as pixie wings, angelic wings, and bug wings.
  • Aug 11 2006: Custom wings.
  • Aug 21 2005: Angel wings with halos.
  • Aug 7 2005: Insect wings, similar to those of a dragonfly or mosquito.
  • Feb 28 2003: Engagement wings.
  • Aug 9 2002: Special avatars or wings for Beekins.

Custom Avatars or Avatar Spaces: The ability to upload your own avatar for everyone to see on main maps. In the past, this suggestion has been rejected on the grounds that it would create massive lag and that it would give players too much control over the appearance of main maps. Most recently, Cironir confirmed that "there are no plans to make this a product that's sold on Digo Market," although it has since been offered as a high-end Second Dreaming reward.

Customizable Avatars: The ability to customize existing avatars (e.g., hair styles, clothing, etc.). Because Furcadia treats each species and frame of animation as a whole picture (and not as a combination of parts), this is not currently feasible. However, avatars will be handled differently after the 32-bit graphics update, so customization will be possible. There will be body and clothing options, and not all of them will cost money. Because customization is slated for the future, I focused on recent threads with comments by DEP. (I also included a few threads that explain why customization isn't feasible yet.)
  • Dec 22 2014: The ability to change the remap colors or markings on Digos.
  • May 9 2012: Choice of colors and/or markings (for example, the ability to make fur color the main color on a Ferian avatar).
  • Jun 8, 2010: In a thread about custom avatars, Felorin noted the possibility of custom attachments: "If we get patchable attachments implemented, that might provide an intermediate stage, where you could have some smaller amount of avatar customization - but with less lag, and a lot less art to draw to make something."
  • May 30 2009: Clothing options that last for a limited time, such as bears with tutus.
  • Apr 26 2009: 10-20 marking choices for each avatar.
  • Apr 18 2009: In the Town Meeting, Emerald Flame discusses attachments: "It is likely that instead of us adding more avatars, we may just give you avatar parts that when combined with other avatars make new things. Like new muzzles and tails and ears and such. Keeping body types the same will make it so that more clothing fits on more avatars! . . . We are starting with tails, wings (maybe ears)...them masks, hats, capes and pawhelds. Later we will remove muzzles, arms, legs, etc to allow for other body parts and clothing. SS will be able to use the parts of all the current avatars that they own. So you can take off the Kirin wings and not wear them or replace them with dragon wings, etc. . . . We are actually breaking the avatars up into those sizes. We have tiny, small, med, large and XL avatars. Most attachments will have three versions made so that they work with *most* avatars."
  • Apr 12 2009: Horn Digos that could be added to any avatar.
  • Jun 16 2008: Ability to create hybrids of free species.
  • Apr 29 2008: Emerald Flame discusses the availability of clothing and hair styles after the 32-bit graphics update.
  • Apr 25 2006: Change furre sizes. Emerald Flame says this would be nice if it's possible. (It can't be done without 3D avatars.)
  • Aug 21 2005: Clothing, such as police uniforms. Ridere explains why customizable avatars are not feasible under Furcadia's current system.
  • Apr 24 2005: Clothing to distinguish between genders. Comments by Farrier.
  • Sep 12 2002: Leticia explains why customizable avatars are not feasible under Furcadia's current system.

Tails: The ability to remove or change the tails on our current avatars is planned for the future. After the 32-bit update, the tails will be detached from the avatars, so it will be easier to change them.

Gendered Avatars: Free gendered defaults may be part of a future update. However, DEP is already releasing Digos in male and female versions. For example, the Noble series already has canines, felines, equines, rodents, humans, mustelines, lapines, and squirrels. The remaining default species will be the next additions to the Noble series. Because gendered avatars are already here, I'm primarily including threads in which DEP talks about the future of gender.
  • Dec 5 2010: Bovine (Sponsorship board).
  • Nov 6 2010: Nobles for all default species.
  • Sep 24 2010: Noble Lizard, Avian, and Monkey.
  • Jul 4 2010: Noble Bugge and Ursine.
  • Nov 29, 2009: Noble Ursine.
  • May 31, 2009: Noble Bovine, Bugge, and Ursine.
  • Apr 18, 2009: In the Town Meeting, Emerald Flame confirms that DEP plans to make Noble versions of all the default species and that Noble Rodents and Noble Mustelines are next.
  • Dec 28 2008: Free gendered defaults. Emerald Flame explains why certain avatars were added and how all avatars will be redone with the 32-bit graphics update.
  • Apr 29 2008: Emerald Flame talks about the future of gendered avatars and the ability to make current avatars look more masculine or feminine. She confirms that DEP does not plan to release free gendered avatars.
  • Apr 11 2008: In this Sponsorship thread, Emerald Flame talks about future avatars, including gendered avatars.
  • Oct 29 2007: Emerald Flame says that the gendered avatars will cost about the same as Ferians, and people will be able to use their wings with them.
  • Sep 16 2002: Included for historic interest, Talzhemir's explanation of DEP's former gender-neutral policy. (Gendered avatars would increase the workload and download size, and people who chose female avatars would be harassed.)

Age-specific Avatars: Avatars that look younger or older than our adult avatars. Different ages will be possible after the 32-bit update, when avatars become modular (broken into different parts). Children are now represented by Furlings, so this list excludes threads about children. There are also plans to make "ling" versions of Ferians. So far, we have the Wolfling, Catling, and Dragonling.

Hyoomans/Humans: The addition of a human avatar has always been a controversial subject. In 2008, DEP revealed the results of a player poll about the addition of humans:
QUOTE (Emerald Flame @ Sep 8 2008, 05:14 AM) *
54.1% Should be added as "free-to-play" avatars (i.e. felines)
7.4% Should be added as "pay-to-play" avatars (i.e. dragons)
14.1% Should only be allowed in private dreams
24.4% Should not be added at all

Although the creators have (at times) been equally divided on this issue, DEP released a Noble Hyooman avatar as part of a surprise update on January 20, 2010.

Because this debate is now moot, I have removed most of the human-related threads from this archive. However, I left those threads either suggest something different from what we have or that best illustrate the history of the controversy surrounding the addition of a human avatar.
  • Oct 13 2010: Human child.
  • Sep 29 2010: Human child.
  • Apr 18 2009: In the Town Meeting, Emerald Flame discusses humans: "That question is still not decided on. Might very well depend on how well Furcadia handles the economic crisis and if we think Humans would being in more sales. Furcadia with humans ir preferable to no Furcadia at all."
  • Jan 26 2009: Human Digo. Talzhemir explains why it's not necessarily desirable to add humans to Furcadia.
  • Sep 6 2008: Emerald Flame talks about DEP's stance on human avatars and how they might be implemented. Players discuss the pros and cons of human avatars, including the effect it would have on interaction between furries and non-furries.
  • Oct 29 2007: On the second page, Emerald Flame talks about humans, adding that it might be better if DEP made a second world for humans.
  • Oct 28 2007: Emerald Flame says that DEP has no official stance on adding humans. (It's undecided.)
  • Aug 4 2006: Contains several comments by players who are very passionate about not adding humans.
  • May 14 2003: Long debate. Includes comments by Emerald Flame, who noted: "Furcadia is about animal characters. If we allow humans in, they could very easily overwelm the basic premise of the game. It would no longer be the same world after awhile."

Mythical Humanoid Races: Elves, dwarves, vampires, angels, demons, neko, etc. DEP is more likely to devote its resources to animals and mythical creatures than to other humanoid forms. However, once customization becomes possible, players may be able to make the Noble Hyooman avatar look more like a mythical humanoid.

Non-human Primates: Apes, monkeys, lemurs, etc. The primary objection to having anthropomorphic primates is that they would look too human. The most recent comment by DEP that I found: "Furcadia usually does anthro animals. An anthro ape is a human." I haven't found any other DEP comments about primates. However, since DEP has added humans, it's possible that DEP might reconsider primates.

Ungulates: Animals with hooves, such as goats, sheep, deer, antelope, giraffes, pigs, and camels. (We already have equines and bovines.) Of these animals, deer and sheep are the most common suggestions. Talzhemir once said that deer were at the top of her to-do list, but that was in 2004.

Marsupials: Kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, Tasmanian devils, possums, wombats, bandicoots, etc. Although DEP has not indicated whether a marsupial avatar will be added, Talzhemir made a comment about Kasurian martial arts that implied that marsupials are part of canon.
  • Nov 29 2011: Kangaroo and koala (from a list of many suggestions).
  • Sep 27 2008: In response to a question about Furcadian naming questions, Talzhemir implied the existence of marsupials by describing their martial arts tradition: "Kiraal includes the use of the tail as a weapon and is preserved by marsupials."
  • Dec 21 2007: Kangaroo.
  • Sep 1 2007: Kangaroo.
  • Jan 16 2006: Kangaroo.
  • Dec 15 2005: Marsupial or kangaroo.
  • Jan 3 2005: Kangaroo.
  • Jun 11 2003: Kangaroo, wallaby, and koala (from a list of many suggestions).
  • Dec 31 2002: Kangaroo.
  • May 12 2002: Kangaroo.
  • Mar 16 2002: Kangaroo (from a list of many suggestions).

Other Mammals

Avians/Birds/Byrddes: Talzhemir once said that there will be a free avian avatar called a "Byrdde." However, in April 2012, Emerald Flame stated, "I don't think there will ever be an non-winged anthro bird. Birds are 'lesser' creatures that we eat in the Furcadia Mythos." In the Dragonlands, "birds, insects, and reptiles occupy the position of the lower animals in Furcadia." Birds are not sentient (unless they're Ferians). Birds are used for food, transportation (Ostrixes and Scarhawks), and bird-wool (herdbirds). If Byrddes were added, they would be a lost race from a primordial part of Drakoria.

Dinosaurs, Reptiles, and Amphibians (AKA "Scalies"): Crocodilians, lizards, snakes/serpents, turtles, salamanders, frogs, etc. Reptiles are one of the most common suggestions. Some people are opposed to adding animals without fur. (They believe that "Furcadia" means furry animals and mythical creatures only.) In the Dragonlands, "birds, insects, and reptiles occupy the position of the lower animals in Furcadia." Currently, the continuity does not allow dinosaurs or reptiles, but there are Wyrmmes (bipedal dragons, the commoners being landbound and wingless), Serps (snake-people), Nagafurres (upper body of a furre; lower body of a snake), and Eetrox (primitive and raptor-like).

Bugges, Insects, and Spiders: Generally, "birds, insects, and reptiles occupy the position of the lower animals in Furcadia." However, the Dragonlands has a race of sentient insects: Bugges. (Bugges are used as slaves in Drakoria.) Their social structure is a hive, where only the Queen lays eggs. Bugge larvae resemble caterpillars, and they have the intelligence of a 7-year-old child. Because we now have a default Bugge avatar, I am only including suggestions for spiders and insects that don't resemble the Bugge avatar.

Aquatic Creatures: Merfurres, selkies, marine mammals, sharks and other fish, cephalopods, crustaceans, jellyfish, etc. Merfurres are a sentient race in the Dragonlands. They have the torso and head of a furre (most commonly equine) and the tail of a fish, shark, dolphin, or seal.

Ferian/Feral and Seasonal: Ferians resemble wild versions of their civilized cousins. Although they are sentient, they do not wear clothing, and they walk on four legs. Ferians have always been part of the Dragonlands. Originally, ferals were a form of Lycanthians: a race that could assume a bestial form. Some lost the ability to revert to their true form. As for future Ferian species, another equine will be released after the 32-bit update. After the 32-bit update, wings will be compatible with Ferians. For historic interest, I have included some posts by DEP that address the idea that DEP changed its stance on feral avatars.

There are a number of ways that someone can become a Ferian but not many ways to undo it. The vast majority of Ferians die Ferians. They also usually go crazy. Sometimes the madness is, they forget they were ever furres."
  • Jun 14 2008: Nacknar (from a list of many suggestions).
  • May 29 2008: Baby Ferians.
  • Mar 26 2008: Lizard.
  • Mar 20 2008: Baby Ferians for those who have both a Ferian and Furling.

  • Jan 23 2008: Emerald Flame explains why Ferian horses can't be added until after the 32-bit update.
  • Jan 19 2008: Hyena.
  • Nov 5 2007: Baby Ferians.
  • Oct 29 2007: Emerald Flame says that there are plans to be able to use your wings with Ferians. She also explains how Ferians have always been a part of the Dragonlands.
  • Oct 20 2007: Short-furred canine.
  • Jul 6 2007: Small Phoenix form that would come with the Phoenix (the way the Eagle comes with the Gryffe). Emerald Flame implied that this would not be implemented, since the Phoenix already has a special ability (flames).
  • Jul 4 2007: Pegasus (from a list of suggestions).
  • May 29 2007: Phoenix, Gryffe, and Kitterwing. Emerald Flame confirms that wings are planned for Ferians.
  • May 19 2007: Emerald Flame and Talzhemir rebut the assertion that DEP used to be opposed to adding ferals and birds and that DEP changed its mind due to popular demand. They explain how Ferians have always been a part of the Dragonlands.
  • Apr 29 2007: Free Ferian forms.
  • Aug 18 2006: Talzhemir explains why DEP delayed the release of ferals but confirms that ferals are planned for the future.
  • Jun 11 2003: Bird (from a list of many suggestions).
  • May 27 2003: Wild pigs.
  • Mar 16 2003: On the second page, Talzhemir says: "The Dragonlands does include ferals as one of the possible forms of Lycanthians. However, ferals don't occur 'naturally' in the Dragonlands . . . there is no Mage spells or Vampire Furre ability to change into a non-sentient quadruped."
  • Oct 9 2002: On the second page, Talzhemir says: "'Ferals' *do* exist as part of cannon Furcadia-- they're the Bestial form of the 'Lycanthians', the were-furres."

Kentauri/Taurs: A Kentauri has the legs of a quadruped and the torso and head of a furre. In the Dragonlands, Kentauri are primitive, violent, and known to eat sentient creatures. Females carry their young in pouches. There are two official races of Kentauri: the Wolventaur and the Leotaur. DEP has stated that it's possible that Kentauri avatars will be added.

Other Species From the Dragonlands: Species that are unique to Furcadia but don't fit into any other category. At least one of these avatars is planned, but the project has been kept under wraps by DEP.
  • Apr 5 2015: "Flitterwing" (Kitterwing with flowers).

  • Oct 10 2009: Common Wyrmme (a wingless bipedal dragon), which could be used as a free reptilian avatar.
  • May 16 2008: Species from the Furcadian Bestiary. Posts were edited from this thread for confidentiality reasons, and Emerald Flame says that insiders aren't supposed to be talking about [the mystery avatar] publicly.
  • Apr 9 2008: Various species from the Furcadian Bestiary, such as the Bogblort, Cauldruin-born, Curcupine, Nagafurre, and Svallfurre.
  • Feb 21 2007: Special avatars for Beekins.
  • Jan 29 2007: Lycanthian WereForms (Abomination, Kawaii, Giganti, Serpenti, Daimoni, etc.).
  • May 1 2004: Beekin avatars, sold as Digos to Beekins.
  • Apr 22 2004: Beekin on-duty avatars. This idea was rejected, because it would encourage Beekins to show off, and it would encourage the wrong people to apply. Talzhemir makes some comments about the Beekin program.
  • Aug 9 2002: Special avatars or wings for Beekins. Farrier says that an un-winged avatar could work, since visual cues are important to new players who are trying to find their Welcomers. The Beekin avatar could possibly be sold as Digos to Beekins.

Other Mythical Beings: An Eastern dragon will probably be added at some point. Those who want to play as WereFurres can now buy Ferian forms or use the seasonal Werewolf avatar. ElvenFurres/Fey are represented by Kitterwings.
