http://dnld1.furcadia.com/furcsetup027b-win98.exe Please note that this is the last version of Furcadia that will support ME and Win98. Microsoft stopped supporting these versions years ago already, so please use this opportunity to get XP or a lightweight Linux version (unsupported). |

Update: the current version (v028) no longer supports Win98/ME.
Trying to install it under these Windows versions will give you an error message: QUOTE (Error) The C:\Windows\Desktop\FurcSetup.exe file expects a newer version of windows. upgrade your windows version. If you have access to a Mac, there is now an installer for OS/X. As Cironir said, you can also run Furcadia from Linux using WINE, though this solution is not officially supported. |

Try downloading the full installer from www.furcadia.com/update instead.

Linux is a free OS. You can run Furcadia on Linux just fine... no budget required there.

I highly doubt that wine will pull it out on a P2 with 64MB of RAM. Taskman says Furcadia already uses 42MB by itself and if you put Linux on top of that, you're left with an abused hard-drive at best...

Furc runs slowly enough on my little EeePC 900, which is running Xandros Linux, and it has a full gig of RAM. WINE is kind of a memory hog.
The 'thinnest' version of Ubuntu (which seems to be CLI server software) needs a minimum of 128MB; most other flavours require at least 512 MB. Furlance, you unfortunately may just not be able to run Furcadia on your computer any more. Win98, besides, is so outdated and prone to security attacks, it's not even really worth it. If you can scrouge together parts (even ones that are 'new to you' - try looking up used computer part dealers like the Free Geek organization), you can put together a serviceable computer pretty cheaply. The operating system part is a little more complicated, particularly if you've never used Linux before, but if you're willing to learn, there are a lot of resources out there. Or you could get a new version of Windows XP, etc, but those will, of course, cost money. |
